Video available on “considerations about offshore release of Fukushima Daiichi treated cooling water” from https://youtu.be/E8yhVYPV9rU

Webinar organised by SHARE, NERIS & ALLIANCE

Wednesday 20th October, 10:00-12:00 (CET)

A decade since the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP, Fukushima is still setting a precedent for emergency and recovery management. In April 2021, the Japanese government announced its approval of the offshore release of water used to cool the damaged Fukushima Daiichi NPP reactors that has been accumulating in onsite storage tanks.

The planned water release is raising many pressing questions regarding technical issues, radiological effects on the environment, international agreements, ethical considerations, and consequences for post-accident management.

Taking up on these questions, the webinar gathers experts from different fields including citizen scientists, radioecologists, ethicists, emergency managers, national authorities, and international organisations.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Mr. Christophe Xerri, IAEA
  • Ms. Yuki Tanabe, Nuclear Accident Response Office, Japan
  • Dr. Thierry Schneider, ICRP, CEPN, France
  • Prof. Jordi Vives i Batlle, SCK CEN, Belgium
  • Mr. Azby Brown, SAFECAST, Japan
  • Prof. Deborah Oughton, CERAD/NMBU, Norway

The webinar was moderated by Joke Kenens, PhD candidate and SHARE member.
