Note from the President

SHARE members at the launch of the SHARE platform in 2019 in Barcelona, Spain

The SHARE Platform was established in 2019 and the first two years have been both rewarding and challenging. Despite the pandemic we have managed to grow our membership and organise a range of successful online events. SHARE was finally registered as a legal entity in October 2021, which enabled us to participate in the application for the large PIANOFORTE Partnership in line with other platforms. The aim of this partnership is to consolidate an EU-wide research and innovation community in the field of radiation protection to support EU and national authorities and to ensure progress with new knowledge, innovative methods and technologies and skills to address current knowledge gaps, societal concerns and emerging issues.

SHARE is represented in a wide range of projects and partnerships. As president, I represent the platform in the Consortium of European Radiation Research Platforms (MEENAS) and we continuously receive requests to present social sciences work to technical audiences and also to present on SHARE objectives in a variety of fora. Thanks to the coordinated effort of individual members, social sciences and humanities are now included more prominently in the EURATOM work program and we participate on several advisory boards.

Currently we have 35 members (a mix of organisations and individuals) and there is increased interest from around the globe.

As we move back into more face-to-face events and opportunities to travel and meet, we can look forward to exciting discussions about our research and to generating new ways to have a positive impact on society.

Successful RICOMET2021

Over 1000 people tuned in to 7th RICOMET conference on Social Sciences and Humanities in Ionising Radiation Research that took place online on September 8-10th 2021. Seven different sessions including webinars and workshops covered topics like societal aspects of radon and NORM, nuclear cultural heritage, transdisciplinarity, participatory approaches in environmental remediation, and ethical aspects of medical application of ionising radiation.

Next RICOMET will be organised together with NORMX2022 in Utrecht, the Netherlands on May 9-13, 2022.

General assembly

3rd General Assembly of the SHARE Platform was held online on September 9th 2021, which covered following topics:

  • Update on the legal status SHARE
  • Review of SHARE activities and way forward (working group Strategic Research Agenda, communication team, ethics working group, RICOMET 2021 and plans for RICOMET 2022)
  • Approval of the financial report
  • Comments from other Radiation Protection platforms (EURADOS, MELODI and NERIS)

Featured project

RadoNorm – Towards effective radiation protection based on improved scientific evidence and social considerations – focus on radon and NORM

  • Leader: The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), Germany
  • Partners: 56
  • EC contribution of 18 M €
